Letters From The Past
Letter from Margaret Pannill
to her daughter, Page Pannill Hodge
Ennis Feb 23 1884
My precious daughter
What on earth is the matter at Chatfield? I've heard but once since I
left I am beginning to feel jealous I want you to love your dear husband
but don't forget your mother
I hardly knowo what to say about your sister's condition...she does not
gain the strength as fast as I wish she could do She has been suffering for
the past two days but is free of pain today Dr Oliver commenced giving her
a tonic yesterday which keeps her nauseated so much she cant relish any kind
of nourishment. Dr. Loggins and Oliver both say they can patch her
up but she will be liable to have a return of these spells whenever she takes
the least cold so long as she remains in Texas. I have not been out
of the house since I have been here until I went to the graveyard and spent
the afternoon.
Your sister unites with me in kind regards to Capt & Mrs Hodge and
much love to yourself and also your husband write soon to your devoted mother
M E P
[She had evidently returned from Chatfield in Navarro County only a few
days after her daughter, Page, married Robert"Dink" Hodge.
Capt. Henry Pannill brought his family from Louisiana to "Old Battersea
Plantation" in Ellis County in the mid- 1860s and returned to fight
in the War.]
