George Cunningham
George Cunningham was a son
of Griffith Cunningham and Nancy Sloan, who had eight children: Ann,
Elizabeth, Melvina, Samuel, Mariah, Griffith, George and Joseph.
He came to Texas in 1849 to the new county of Ellis.
He was deputy surveyor for four counties: Ellis, Johnson, Navarro and
Hill, and later served as district surveyor in the Robinson land
district. In 1859, he married Tennessee Sims, a daughter of John D.
Sims and had nine children: Elizabeth Elliott (m. Y. C. Edmondson);
Nancy George (m. W. M. Tatum of Corsicana, Tex.); Griffith Benton,
John Dabney, Mary Frances (m. T. L. NcCartley; Janis Womack, Edward
Forrest, Claudius and Barzilla. During the War, he served in Company C, 19th Texas Cavalry.
George H. Cunningham
Born Jan. 28, 1828 in Middle Tennessee, son of
Griffith and Nancy Sloan Cunningham and grandson of Irish immigrant James
Cunningham of New Jersey.Came to Ellis County 1849, where was surveyor for
Ellis, Johnson, Navarro and Hill Counties, and later Surveyor for Robertson
District, which included ten counties. On Sept. 16, 1859, married Tennessee
Sims, daughter of John D. Sims. They had nine children. Enl. Pvt., later
Lt., Co. C., 19th Tex. Cav., CSA; was a large land owner and in 1868 he and
P. C. Sims donated land for Bethel Cemetery.
