Hugh H. Galbraith

Hugh H. Galbraith was born December 3, 1842 in Owensound, Ontario, Canada.
He married Mary Ann Richardson in 1870. Her parents were Tom Richardson born
in Ireland on November 3, 1824 and Mary Jane Richardson born in England in
1821.
Hugh and Mary Galbraith came to Ellis County in 1882 along with several
families of Richardsons. Five children accompanied the Hugh Galbraiths: Minnie,
age ten; Fred, age eight; Tom, age six; Addie, age four, and Oscar, age
two.
When the family crossed the Red River they were asked what kind of land
they wanted, to which Hugh Galbraith replied, "No land. A Presbyterian Church."
They were directed to Mill Creek and found Milford where they camped in the
yard of the First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1860.
Minnie married Wilson Edwards in 1890, Fred became a Presbyterian minister,
Tom married Lovie Neal and became a well known architect, Addie married Nellie
Hampton, and Oscar married Doyle Scott.
Hugh Galbraith was a builder of homes, churches, schools, and hotels. In 1890, he constructed the first school in Milford which was the Milford Academy.
