Pioneers of Ellis County
Thomas J. Hines
Born in 1800 in South Carolina,
Hines moved his family from Tennessee to Ellis County about 1853,
settling on Chamber;s Creek, on land purchased in 1845. He is credited
with building the first public gin and first brick house. His mother
is said to have died when he was only five, and he was at least
partially reared by his uncle, Edward H. Tarrant. Thomas Hines first
married Mary R. Moore, who died in Ellis County in 1858. Their
children: Martha B., (m., Solomon Yarbrough); William R., Johnnie M.,
John (m. Adelia Patrick); James K. Polk, Thomas J. Hines, Jr. and
Eliza Jane (m. Dr. Lafayette S. Nelson). Thomas Hines Sr. married
second Nancy J. Young, and had children: Blanche, Mary F., and Robert
L.
