John Randolph McFadden was born March 3, 1835 in Chester County, South
Carolina. He graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina and received
his M. D. from the University of South Carolina. He married Mary Albertina
Givens, a niece and ward of General D. H. Hill, a professor at Davidson
College.
Dr. McFadden served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army holding
the rank of Brigadier General. His wife stayed with relatives in Arkansas
while he was away and his eldest child, Mary Hill McFadden, was born there.
At the end of the War he brought his wife and child to Milford, Texas,
where he continued to practice medicine. - being known and loved by several
generations of citizens of that community.
The other McFadden children (all born at Milford) were: Paul. McFadden,
(lived Austin, Texas, and was mayor for several terms); Dr. J. R. McFadden,
Jr., (practiced medicine in Milford); J. A. McFadden, ( lived Yoakum,
Texas); Sam G. McFadden, (lived Milford); Ike McFadden, (in the lumber
business in Dallas); and Susie McFadden, (married Nelson Philips, later
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas). Dr. McFadden was a devout Presbyterian and was an Elder in the Presbyterian
Church in Milford for many years. All five of his sons became Elders in their
respective churches. When he came to Texas, Dr. McFadden first stopped in
the small community of Dallas, and considered settling there, but since there
was no Presbyterian Church, he moved on to Milford, where there was such
a church.
