Edward New enrolled in Co A Buford's 19th Tex Cav, Parson's Brigade, CSA. Muster roll states his horse was valued at $125 and his equipment at $25. The "Bounty Pay and Receipt roll"shows he reported to Camp Stonewall Jackson, Hdqrs 19th Regt Tex Cav, Dallas Co. June 23, 1862. He was paid a $50 enlistment bounty [Film No. M227, Roll 27] New was a native of Gallatin Co. Ky., born April 19, 1830, son of James B. New and Frances Spencer, natives of that state. His grandfather, William New, was born in Rhode Island but moved to Ky. where he reared his family and died. James New was a saddler and later turning to farming. He died in Kentucky in 1851 and his wife in 1895. They were the parents of seven children: E. S., Frank S. (resident of Texas since 1857 and CSA vet, now living San Saba, Tex; ) William H., (moved to Tex 1857 now living Indian Nation:) Nancy (wife of J. T. Edmonds of Ky); Susan, (wife of F. G. Acre, Llano Co. Tex); Betty (wife of William Rainbolt, lives Indian Nation); Mary, (wife of John T. Scott, lives San Saba Co. Tex). Edward S. New attended common schools near his home and in 1853 married and settled in Mayfield, Ky., where he had a harness and saddle shop, and kept the post office. He married Miss Mary Peterson, daughter of a Kentucky farmer, William Peterson. They had twelve children: Edward, Emma, Mrs. Mary E. Gilpin, Mrs. Fanny McGehee; Mrs. Laura W. Wylie, William, Frank, Anna, Robert, Ada, James and Hay G. New. In 1857 Edward emigrated to Texas, first locating at Waxahachie, where he worked at his trade for a year and then turned his attention to the stock business. He enlisted the first year of the war in Buford's Nineteenth Texas Cavalary, Parson's Brigade and saw service in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, also making one raid up into Missouri. He was never wounded nor captured and was near Houston at the time of the surrender. He returned to his home in Ellis County, gathered his stock and moved to Bosque County.
