Pioneers of Ellis County
Emory W. Rogers
Born in Lawrence County, Alabama in
1813 and married Nancy Clinton Minter; five children , three born in
Alabama and five in Texas. The family settled in Robertson County, Tex.
in 1833. His certificate for 640 acres was the site on which the
town of Waxahachie was surveyed. His family settled near present-day
Milford. During the Civil War, Emory Rogers was Major of the 12th
Texas Cavalry Regiment under W. H. Parsons. He contributed much to
the early years of the county, donating land for the City Cemetery,
Fair Grounds, and another ten acres for the construction of Marvin
College. He held the office of County Treasurer - the first - and
served as a State Senator. Emory Rogers died in 1874 and his wife
a year later. Both are buried in Waxahachie Cemetery.
