Allen Stoker married Nancy Parker (b. 1819 in North Carolina daughter
of John Parker). The Stoker family came to Texas in 1867 via Alabama and
Mississippi. but Allen returned to Mississippi for a twelve-year stay,
returning to Stephens County (near Breckenridge) in 1882, where he
died Feb. 14, 1887. He was a farmer, Democrat, and member (over 40 years)
of the Missionary Baptist Church, serving as Elder for a long time
The Stokers were the parents of twelve children: Mary E., deceased; Richard
J.; Enoch T., [more later]; John H., Robert G., William, Susan, Iziah, Nancy
L., George P., Bunyan, and Charlie.
Enoch Stoker was born in 1842 in Mississippi. He enlisted in CSA,
Co. C., 4th Mississippi Regiment, and participated in the battles
of Fort Henry, Donaldson, Vicksburg, Port Hudson and a number of skirmishes.
Taken prisoner at Fort Donelson, he was sent to Indianapolis, Indiana, and
exchanged at Vicksburg. He was again captured at Nashville and taken to Camp
Douglas. He served during the entire war and was slightly wounded at the
siege of Vicksburg. He returned home, having just fifteen cents and only
$25 or $30 when he landed in Texas. He now [1892] owns 970 acres of land,
450 acres under cultivation, eighty-five head of cattle and thirty horses
and mules.
In 1871 he married Miss Mary Clayton, ( born in Texas in 1852, a daughter
of J. J. Clayton, native of Mississippi, and Elizabeth Newton Clayton, native
of Missouri.) [The Claytons have four living children: Naomi, wife of John
Laughlin; Mary, wife of Enoch Stoker, Nancy, wife of C. M. Berry, and George
R. Clayton, M. D., of Sherman, Texas.]
Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Stoker had seven children: Amos, Clayton, George,
Olie, Isa, Walter and Bula.
He is a Democrat; a Master Mason, and he and his wife are members of
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
