Summer Normal
Right now is the time for everyone in Midlothian having a large enough residence
above what the family actually requires to begin to think about just how
many teachers they can take to room and board during the summer normal. There
are more than 150 teachers in this county and more than this in each of the
counties of Dallas and Tarrant. In other words, there are in the three counties
about 500 teachers. Of this number there will, at a low estimate, be at least
one hundred of them that will attend the normal. There may be more, therefore
it behooves every family who can arrange to take care of one or more to begin
preparation to do so. Mr. SAM REESE has been appointed a committee
to find who will care of teachers and how many and also at what price. Mr.
Reese will call on those of the ladies next week who he thinks likely will
help in this matter in order to ascertain just where we are at in the way
of room and board. The teachers will be with us five weeks and if you have
the room and are short on bedding or a few pieces of furniture it might be
well to look after these things beforehand. Mr. Reese and the teachers too,
we learn are desirous of having uniform price set on the room and board.
Owing to the high price of all eatibles it has been suggested by some that
$2.50 or $2.75 per week for the entire five weeks, and where no time was
lost in visits or the like, would be a fair price to charge. This might seem
high to some and not enough to others and it has only been given as a suggestion.
Certain it is that we must take care of the teachers and sooner arrangements
are put on foot and a start made the better shape will find ourselves when
the summer normal opens. Let everybody do what they can to give Mr. Reese
a definite answer when he calls on you, and if he fails to see you and can
take one or more just come and report to this office and we will have you
put down on the list.

[Obituary Midlothian Argus]
S. L. Reese, a citizen of this community for nearly fifty years, died
at the Waxahachie sanitarium Thursday night, Dec. 3, 1925, and was laid to
rest in the Shiloh cemetery Friday afternoon by the side of his wife who
went on about forty years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L.
C. Collier of Forrest Hill. Mr. Reese was born in Georgia in 1843, moved
to Louisiana from which state he entered the Civil War before he was 18 years
old. He did service in Co. H, 3rd Louisiana Regiment and was engaged in such
battles as Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg and others. He was the lone survivor
of five brothers who went to the war. In 1870 he was united in marriage to
Miss Kate Armistead and six years later they moved to Texas, locating a few
miles east of Midlothian where he lived until his death except for a few
years spent in Midlothian, where he came to educate his children. For a number
of years he was a member of the school board here. Two sons and three daughters
are left to mourn his death as follows: Sam Reese, Midlothian; Ed Reese,
El Paso; Mrs. E. C. [Kate] McElroy, Ponder, Mrs. S. H. [Mary L.] Hendricks,
Midlothian and Mrs. Winnie Hendrixson of Waxahachie. All of the children
were here to attend the funeral except the son who lives at El Paso who arrived
a day or two later.
