Maxwell Eugene Ammons - Died 20 February 2009 – Walters Funeral Home
Funeral services for Maxwell Eugene “Gene” Ammons, age 79, of Oakwood are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at the Walters Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas. Dale Ammons will officiate the service and interment will be in the Union Cemetery near Freestone, Texas.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the family present from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Gene Ammons was born on December 31, 1929 in Union, Mississippi to Jessie Monroe and Leona (Goss) Ammons. He had lived in Oakwood for the past thirty years coming from Conroe, Texas. He was raised in Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. He had his private pilot’s license and loved to fly. He served in the United States Air Force and the Marine Corp Reserves. He was also a Reserve deputy for Freestone County Sheriff’s Dept for thirty five years, and he retired from Nucor Steel in 1991. He and his wife, Shirley had been married for fifty-one years. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; Hughlene Champion and Odessa Hendricks. Gene passed away Friday, February 20, 2009 in Palestine, Texas.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Ammons of Oakwood, Texas; one son, Dale Ammons and wife Cathy of Palestine, Texas; three daughters, Renee McKenzie and husband, Steve of Arkansas, Teresa Greene of Palestine, Texas, and Katrina McClain and husband, Matt of Decatur, Texas; three sisters, Annie Puryear of Deer Park, Texas, Johnnie Lansford of Fairfield, Texas, and Lois Hayes and husband, Darrell of Dumas, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Joshua, Rachel, Trey, Ryan, Maxwell, Kayleigh, Nikki, Tommy, and Wyatt.
