Danville Mason's Lodge No 101
1851-1853
A petition signed by thirteen Masons living in the Danville area who
were members of the Clinton Lodge resulted in a dispensation from the
Grand Lodge of Texas to
organize the Danville Lodge No 101. This dispensation was dated
16 October, 1851, and was signed by Robert E. Wynne, Grand Master, at
Linn Flat, Texas.
The organizational meeting was held 1 November, 1851 with Masons Samuel
McClarty, C. Chaney and William Howeth of the Clinton Lodge and F. M.
Stovall of Marshall
convening the meeting. Officers installed at this organizational meeting
were: Drury H. Lett, Worthy Master; James Davenport, Senior Warden;
Jesse G. B. Graybill, Junior Warden; Thomas Templeton, Treasurer; John
W. Wilson, Secretary; Henry Tucker, Senior Deacon; Henry Dickson, Junior
Deacon; Meshak Barber, Tyler. Other charter members were William
W. Caulder, Oliver H. Pegues, and Elbert Dickson. The Lodge was
to meet "on the Thursday at or preceding the full moon of each month"
in the town of Danville.
The first returns dated 27 December 1851 include the thirteen original
Master Masons as well as A. R. Hamilton and G. S. Irons, who had been
initiated 8 November, 1851
and were Fellow Craft Masons, and James A. Dickson and L. Elliott, initiated
11 December, 1851, Apprentices.
