GREGG & PRE-GREGG COUNTY POSTOFFICES & POSTMASTERS THROUGH THE YEAR 1900
By: Edward W. Phillips & Murle K Phillips Rhodes

(Also some postoffices and postmasters of that part of Upshur and Rusk counties which later became Gregg County. Some names are obviously spelled incorrectly. However, no attempt was made to correct the spelling.)

A special thanks go to Eddie Phillips & Murle Phillips Rhodes for the use of this information. We are presenting it to you exactly as it was given to us.

Gregg County was carved out of Rusk and Upshur Counties, Texas, in 1873. Upshur County was carved out of Harrison and Nacogdoches Counties in 1846 and Rusk County was carved out of Nacogdoches County in 1843. In researching any history of Gregg County, it is necessary to keep such facts in mind.

During the Republic of Texas era, more than one postal route must have crossed what is now Gregg County. However, no towns existed and no villages are mentioned in Republic of Texas postal records which cover what is now known as Gregg County, Texas. The oldest village in present day Gregg County is probably Wallings Ferry, also known as Camden. Although not mentioned in Republic of Texas postal records, wallings Ferry seems certain to have had postal service from Shelbyville as early as 1839.
NOTE: Someone may ask "What about Greggton?"  Greggton did not have a post office before 1900. The community of Willow Springs later became Greggton.
