Kilgore: The Town & The Name

Compiled by Lawson Keener Lace ( Mrs Rogers Lacy )
This information was found by Linda Laminack in the genealogy department of the Longview Library.

Constantine Buckley Kilgore was born Feb 20, 1835 in Newnan, Coweta Co, Georgia.  In 1846 he came with his parents, Mr & Mrs Willis Kilgore, to Rusk County, Texas.  In 1858, he married Miss Frances Young Barnett, daughter of Stephen Slde Barnett and Talitha Cumi Woods Barnett of Rusk County.  She was born Aug 26, 1838.

The C B Kilgore family moved from "Old Danville" to "New Danville" and the name of the new town was changed to Kilgore in his honor, in 1873.

Deed Records of Rusk County, Book T, page 718, show that on March 19, 1872, J T Estill sold to C B Kilgore 731 acres of land in Mary Van Winkle Survey, 14 miles north of Henderson.

You attention is called to the following original grant of land because it lies in the City of Kilgore:  Abstract No. 208, Patent 776, Vol 6, Original Grantee, Mary Van Winkle;  Patentee, Mary Van Winkle, 4428 acres, Jan 5, 1849.

Gregg County deed records, Book C, pages 583 - 585, reveal that C B Kilgore deeded for $100 right-of-way to International Railroad Co., a strip 200 feet wide in Kilgore, over which the railroad built its new rail line.  Dated Oct 28, 1871, the instrument was signed by Galusha A Grow, President of the
railroad;  County Clerk R B Levy, Sr and T M Campbell, Deputy Clerk, who later was Governor of Texas, 1909-1911.

On July 15, 1874, Gregg County records, Book A pages 510-513, was recorded the dedication by the International Railroad Co of the streets and alleys of the town of Kilgore for public use.

In 1877, Mr Kilgore removed from Kilgore to Wills Point, Van Zandt County, where he lived when he was elected a member of the U S Congress.  I often heard my mother speak of Mr. Kilgore.
