Gregg County Texas
Named after John Gregg, a Confederate General, Gregg County was formed in 1873, from Rusk and Upshur Counties. A small county, made by the coming of the railroad, and a booming lumber industry, became large. With the discovery of "black crude" a whole new era of industry and growth began in Gregg County. The county seat is in Longview (the eastern edge is in Harrison County), and there are only three other towns of size in the county, Gladewater (the western part of Gladewater is still in Upshur County), White Oak, and Kilgore (whose southern edge is still part of Rusk County). |
