September 09, 2002 Obituaries - Placed 9-9-2002 Philip R. Pence Sr. Graveside services for Phillip R. Pence Sr., 79, of Tyler are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Athens Cemetery with the Rev. Danny Carter. Arrangements are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Pence died Sept. 8, 2002, in Tyler. He was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Lexington, Ky., to Lyman M. and Pearl Bohannon Pence. Mr. Pence was a longtime resident of Texas, having lived in Tyler the past 40 years. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Tyler, and a lifelong choir member. As a child, he attended the first National Boy Scout Jamboree, and later served as an adult Scout leader. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army and served with Merrilla's Marauders Division in Burma. He retired from Kelly-Springfield in Tyler. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Holland Pence on Nov. 3, 2001; brother, Charles M. Pence; and a sister, Norma Mentero. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Janet Pence of Waco, and Phillip and Pam Pence of Fort Worth; grandchildren, John Pence of Dallas, Sarah Pence of Aspen, Colo., Beth Pence, Carrie Pence, and Scott Pence, all of Fort Worth; and two great-grandchildren.
