Obituary -- Placed April 9, 2003 Sarah D. George Services for Sarah D. George, 78, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Athens Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. George died April 8, 2003, at her residence. She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Winnsboro to the late Joseph Johnson and Pearl Clifford Acker Dickson. She earned a bachelor of arts and masters degree from East Texas State University at Commerce and was a 50-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was co-founder in 1958 and charter member of the Athens Chapter Epsilon Epsilon and held many positions, the most recent being parliamentarian. She was recipient of the Achievement Award Honor for her chapter in 1960 and the State Achievement Award in 1999. Having resided in Athens since 1946, Mrs. George was a teacher at Trinity Valley Community College for 35 years and was division chairman of the business department for 34 years. Her professional affiliations included Texas Junior College Teachers Association, Texas Business Education Association, National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association and National Business Education Association. Through her 37 years as an educator in Texas, Mrs. George's teaching philosophy was "Students are lamps to be lighted and not vessels to be filled." She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Henderson County Retired Teachers Association and the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Willard H. George of Athens; cousins, Ann Moore of Winnsboro, Jane Cox of Commerce and Joe Marie Stephenson of Midlothian. Pallbearers include James Owen, Fancher Melton, Randy Daniel, Mike Stover, Archie Dennis and Ray Williams. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday.
