History of the Cemetery

Copiers note: The Jackson Prairie Cemetery is said to have once been a large cemetery, serving a prosperous community of the same name. Abandoned in the 1930's, many of the grave markers were reputedly carried away by unscrupulous persons for use as house blocks or steps. The cemetery was originally located on the east side of a dirt road running to a ferry on the Trinity River, and a line of trees still marks the faint outlines of this road. When State Highway 274 was created in the 1930's, the dirt road was abandoned. nothing remains of this cemetery today, as it was not protected from livestock which roam the wooded area in which it is now located. It is said that that now a house has been built upon this cemetery. If you have any information about this cemetery..please contact
