    Virgie Mae Malone

    Graveside services for Virgie Mae Malone, 71, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. J.R. Pruitt offciating. Burial will be under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Malone passed away at home with her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on Aug. 24, 1999. She was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Rice to Frank Cissro and Eula Busby Whitehead. She was preceded in death by her husband and partner of 47 years, Eugene (Gene) Malone. "God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you And whispered, "Come with me." With tearful eyes we watched you And watched you passed away, And though we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands were put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best." Mrs. Malone is survived by daughter, Jeanne Williams of Arlington; son, Danny Malone of Athens; grandchildren and their spouses, Kristi Wright and James Powell of Arlington, K.D. Wright of Athens, Joshua Malone of Athens and Jamie Malone of Athens; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Delorse Whitehead of San Antonio, Johnny and Hellen Whitehead of Athens, Virgil Whitehead of Chula Vista, Calif., and Edith Horton of Gun Barrel; and numerous loving nieces and nephews with their extended families and many caring friends and neighbors.

    Jerry L. Martin

    Services for Jerry L. Martin, Sr., 63, of Athens were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, in Ash Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Jones officiating. Burial was in Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. Mr. Martin died March 10, 1999, in East Texas Medical Center in Athens. He was born February 26, 1936, in Athens to the late Clarence A. "Tince" and Dolas Novella Tanner Martin. He graduated from Athens High School in 1954 and attended Henderson County Junior College. After moving to Houston in 1954, he worked for the Houston Port Authority 25 years and follwing retirement returned to Athens in 1981. He was a member of Ash Baptist Church. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, D.A. and Sarah Bell Tanner; brothers, Roy, Alvin and Bruce Tanner. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 41 years, Billie Martin of Athens; sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry Lawson Martin Jr. of Salem and Allen Ray and Barbara Ann Martin of Humble, David Arnold Martin of Channelview; step-mother, Lydia Christine Martin of Huffman; brothers, Robert Martin of Silsbee, Harold Martin of Calvert and John Wayne Martin of Jasper; sisters, Bobbye Martin and Sheree Martin, both of Houston, Leola Calhoun of Athens and Juanita Bowman of Lubbock; and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were David Karr, Gaylin Martin, Brian Martin, Ronnie Burns, Jeff Bostick, Danny Burns, Ray Jackson, Keith Martin. Honorary pallbearer was Arnold Martin.     Jacinto "Jay" Martinez

    Services for Jacinto "Jay" Martinez, 38 of Murchison are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church Murchison with the Revs. Cliff Cooper and Rudy Sayas officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Martinez died March 22, 2001, in Dallas. He was born March 1, 1963, in Grand Saline to Jacinto and Connie Sayas Martinez. Mr. Martinez lived in Murchison for 24 years. He attended Murchison and Brownsboro schools and was a member of First Baptist Church Murchison. He was a professional jockey and horse trainer. Survivors include his wife, Joann Martinez; son, Rocky J. Martinez of Murchison; daughter, Madison Paige Martinez of Carrizo Springs; father and stepmother, Jacinto and Fay Martinez of Hickory Hills; mother and stepfather, Connie and Loyd Willingham of Murchison; brother, Freddie Martinez of Callendar Lake; sisters, Ruth Ann Townley and Carolyn Vasquez, both of Athens; and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

    Dorothy Dale MaCain

    Services for Dorothy Dale McCain, 73, of Trinidad were held at 10 a.m. Friday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. McCain died Thursday morning, Oct. 8, 1998, at East Texas Medical Center Athens. She was born March 16, 1925, in Crocket, the daughter of the late Jim and Lilly Green Hughes, and was a resident of the Henderson County are most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John William McCain, on March 20, 1982. Mrs. McCain is survived by two daughters, Cora Gibbs of Trinidad and Skip Rankin of Cut Off, and other relatives.

    Heather Nicole Miers

    Services for Heather Nicole Miers, 20, of Athens are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pat Gresham officiating. Burial will be at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Athens under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Miss Miers passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, in Athens. She was born June 25, 1983, in Tyler. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Sharon Woodard; and maternal and paternal great-grandfathers. Miss Miers was a resident of Athens all her life. She was a member of West Athens Baptist Church in Athens. She had attended Trinity Valley Community College and was employed by Friedman's Jewelry Store in Athens for the past 14 months. She was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend to all. She wanted everyone to know that she loves them. Survivors include her parents, Tommy and Trena Miers of Athens; brother, Aaron Miers of Athens; maternal grandfather, Don Virdell of Weatherford; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Bonnie Miers of Athens; maternal great-grandmother, Lillie Blackmon of Terrell; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Everett of Athens; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of loving friends. Pallbearers will be Allen Pirtle, Bobby Everett, Jeff Miers, Tony Miers, Scott Everett and Dan Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Rickey Pirtle, David Miers and Tim Miers. Family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Miller died Sept. 5, 2000, in Athens. He was born May 23, 1914, in Henderson County to R.Z. and Jewell Wood Miller. Mr. Miller retired from Amoco Oil Company as a pipe fitter and rigger. He was Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Garnett Miller, Tom Miller and Lynn Miller; and sisters, Elenore Pruitt and Lucille Chambers. Survivors include wife, Mamie Miller of LaRue; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Steven of Jacksonville; sons and daughters-in-law, Varge Lee and Edna Miller of Jacksonville, Larry Gene and Pat Miller of Jacksonville and Jerry Fern and Karen Miller of Stephenville; stepdaughters and stepson-in-law, Doris and Scott Mosley of Missouri City, Sherry Gregorcyk of College Station and Terry Dreier of LaRue; brothers, Muriel Miller of Reklaw and David Miller of Poynor; sisters, Carolyn Bevel of Athens and Inez Meadors of LaRue; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.     Murrell Dean Miller

    Graveside services for Murrell Deen Miller, 67, of Reklaw and formerly of Athens, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. Mr. Miller died April 18, 2002 in Gatesville. He was born April 29,1934, in Athens to R.Z. and Jewel Woods Miller. Survivors include his children, Cara Miller of Reklaw, Teresa Jane Hughes of Martins Mill, Jeffery Murrell Miller of Murchison, Melody Kelley of Dayton, Tracy Ann Miller of Athens, Stacy Jan Ratfield of Jacksonville, Larissa Berry of Gatesville, Dustin Miller of Gatesville; sisters, Carolyn Bevel of Athens, Casey Inez Meadors of Baxter; a brother, David P.     Barbara Miller

    Services for Barbara Moorehead, 63, of Chandler were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Chandler with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Henderson County under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home of Chandler. Mrs. Moorehead died June 17, 2003, in Tyler. She was born Sept. 1, 1939, in Henderson County. She was a member of Martin Springs Baptist Church and worked in the insurance business for 30 years. Survivors include her son, Mace Moorehead of Chandler; brother, Buck Hodge of Chandler; sisters, Vivian Myers of Athens and Alice Wagner of Dallas; several nieces and nephews; and longtime friend, Shelby Wine. Pallbearers were the men of Martin Springs Baptist Church.

    Orline Bell Nolder Jr.

    Graveside services for Orline Bell Nolder Jr., 38, of Athens, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Greenawalt officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Nolder died March 27, 2000, in Athens. He was born June 8, 1961, in Pennsylvania to Orline Bell Nolder Sr. and Gay Patterson Nolder. Mr. Nolder was a member of Dogwood Baptist Church in Athens. Mr. Nolder was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Mary Jo Nolder of Athens; brothers, Arthur Nolder of Greenville, George Nolder of Greenville, Ken Nolder of Illinois and Bob Nolder of Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jerry, Robert, Wendall and Gregory Bolden, Johnny Holmes and Gary Stovall. Visitation is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

    Eithel Norman

    Funeral services for Eithel Norman, 94, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cooper Funeral Home in Athens with the Rev. Charles Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Norman was born May 24, 1909, in Nacogdoches County to Henry and Effie Norman and lived most of her life in Henderson County. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Athens. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyle Norman, in 1972; sister, Verna Holcomb; and grandson, Joseph Norman. She passed away Tuesday morning, May 11, 2004, in Athens. Mrs. Norman is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and B.J. Norman of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and David Ford of LaPorte; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jack Kaltenbaugh, Alfred Barnes, Weston Norman, Jeremy Miller, David Ford and Darren Moon. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday. Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

    Wayne Norman

    Services for Wayne Norman, 60, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cooper Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Calvin Gustin officiating. Interment will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery near Athens under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Norman passed away Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Norman was born March 20, 1944, in Athens and lived his entire life in Henderson County. He worked with his father at Norman Plumbing and Electrical for many years. He had been employed as an electrician for several years in Smith County and most recently at Hendry Electric in Athens. He was a member of the local electricians union in Tyler. He enjoyed old Western movies, televised football games and spending time with family and friends. His story could not be complete without mention of his dog, Spanky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyle and Eithel Norman; sister, Verna Mae Holcomb; grandson, Joseph Allen Norman; and wife, Margaret Jean Norman. Survivors include his wife, Billie Rogers Norman of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Donald Wayne and Tina Norman of Terrell; two daughters, Cheryl Norman of Malakoff and Sherry McNeal of Fort Worth; stepson, Chris Rogers of Athens; sister, and brother-in-law, Jan and David Ford of LaPorte; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Mike Menzel, David Hendry, Otis Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Jack Kaltenbaugh and Dan Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Sims, Kenneth Lookabaugh, Robert H. Hodge, Billy Jack Gibbs, Roland Crossley, Cleve Maxey, Wade Hendry, Gene Minter and Dr. Kenneth Lemmon.     Brady Paris

    Funeral services for Brady Paris, 23, of Crawford and formerly of Athens, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Christian Church in the Bethel community with the Revs. Perry Smith and Bob Tice officiating. Burial will be at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Paris died Friday, February 22, 2002, at his residence in Crawford. He was born in Athens on May 1, 1978, to Billy Dean Paris and Sally Fawn Cook Greer. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, D.O. Paris; and maternal grandfather, Loran "Chunk" Cook. Mr. Paris was a resident of Crawford for the past six months and a resident of Athens most of his life. He graduated from Athens High School in 1997. Whether climbing a power pole or slinging mud with his truck, if he was outdoors he was happy. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Billy and Sharla Paris of Athens; mother and stepfather, Sally and Randy Greer of Waco; brother, Brian Paris of Athens; stepbrothers, Shayde Harrison of Athens and Blaine Harrison of Euless; paternal grandmother, Alla Bea Paris of Athens; maternal grandmother, Maureen Cook of Waco; stepgrandparents, O.F. and Genelle Armstrong of Trinidad; and uncles and aunt, Randy and Carolyn Paris, Jerry Lee Paris and Marshall Cook, all of Athens.     Services for Shannon Lynn Paul Phillips, 32, of Athens were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Graff officiating. Private burial was at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Henderson County. Ms. Phillips died June 1, 2001, in Athens. She was born April 30, 1969, to Ted and Delores V. Weatherford Phillips. She was a lifetime resident of Athens. She was a Baptist and an avid camper. She loved fishing. Survivors include her son, Justin Paul of Athens; daughter, Brittney Paul of Athens; mother and stepfather, Delores and Jerry Boyd of Athens; brother, Dewayne Phillips of Athens; sister and brother-in-law, Annissa and Brian Wood of Kaufman; stepbrothers and stepsister-in-law, Dan and Carolyn Boyd of Corinth and Steve Boyd of Tyler; stepsister and stepbrother-in-law, Lori and Jeff Carter of Tyler; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.     Fannie Estes Pinkerton

    Athens Weekly Review Thursday, November 30, 1939 Funeral for Mrs. J. M. Pinkerton at Shelby Chapel Funeral services for Mrs. J. M. Pinkerton, 74, who died at Plainview on Saturday, were held at Shelby Chapel at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. D. R. Cartlidge conducting the services. Burial arrangements were in charge of the Athens Funeral Home. Mrs. Pinkerton, the former Miss Fannie Estes, was born in Pickens County, Alabama, on June 18, 1865. She was married to J. M. Pinkerton on October 16th, 1893, and they came to Texas in 1916. they lived in this county for a number of years before moving to Plainview. Surviving besides her husband are five children, I. T. Pinkerton of Fort Worth, Mrs. Icie Lundy of Alice, Texas, Jimmie Pinkerton of Athens, Homer Pinkerton of Plainview and Mrs. Bertha Johnson of Plainview. In addition there are eighteen surviving grandchildren. Deceased united with the church at the age of 14.

    Lizzie Womack Ponder

    Athens Weekly Review Dec. 20, 1934 Mrs. T. J. Ponder, 61, Dies Friday Night At Home Near Murchison Mrs. T. J. Ponder, 61, died at her home four miles northwest of Murchison Friday night following a critical illness of several days duration. Relatives were called to her bedside Friday. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Shelby Chapel where interment followed. The deceased is survived by her husband and a number of children.

    Edward Franklin Price

    Graveside services for Edward F. Price, 67 of Baxter Community were conducted Saturday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with Athens I00F Lodgemembers officiating. Burial servies were under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Price died Wednesday in a Dallas hospital after a long illness. He was born Nov. 28, 1917 in Athens. He lived for most of his life in the Athens area. He was a member of the I00F lodge in Athens and was a Veteran of World War II having served with occupation forces in Japan following action in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of war operations. He is survived by his wife Letha of Baxter Community a son and daughter-in-law Edward and Sharon Price of Florida a daughter-in-law Nora Bass of Athens two brothers Bill of Houston and Ray of Coolidge, three sisters Estelle Ditto of Athens, Edna Strange of Athens, and Mrs. Johnnie Hyett of Athens and four grandchildren.

    John Ray

    Feb. 15, 1969 Services for John Ray, 75 of Athens were held Sunday afternoon at the Hassell and Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. J.W. Thomison conducted the services and burial was in Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Ray died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon in and Athens hospital. He was born in Henderson County and lived in Athen all of his life, He was a retired Plumber, a member of the Assembly Of God Church and a Veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ona Ray of Athens, four sons John Ray Jr. and Jim Ray both of Athens, Bill Ray of Eagle Lake and George Ray of Brownsboro, three daughters, Mrs. T.N. Bond of Highlands and Mrs. J.B. Lewis and Mrs. C.W. Richards both of Athens and 19 grandchildren.

    Ona Mable Ray

    Graveside services for Ona Mable Ray, 98, of Athens were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. J.W. Thomison officiating. Services were under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Ray died June 7, 2002, in Athens. She was born Jan. 30, 1904, in Dawson, Kan., to Albert Curtis Hodge and Nany Jackson. Mrs. Ray was a charter member of Calvary Assembly of God in Athens and worked as a homemaker. She spent her life serving God and her church and caring for her vast family. She was known as "Mammy" by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, John J. Ray, in 1969; sons, John J. "Bud" Ray Jr., James A "Jim" Ray, George K. Ray; daughters; Katherine L. "Kitty" Lewis Warren; four brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Mary E. and Newton Bond of Corsicana and Naomi J. and Chester Richards of Athens; son, William F. Ray of El Campo; daughter-in-law, Deane Ray; 30 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers were James Jones, John Jones, Jay Jones, Brad Moreland, Billy Wayne Harris and Gene Williams.

    Janey Reed

    Services for Janey Reed, 45, of Brownsboro are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Starkes officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Reed died May 12, 2004, in Tyler. She was born June 11, 1958, in Athens to Harold Manuel Sr. and Willa Dee Green Manuel. Mrs. Reed was a resident of Henderson County most of her life. She attended Athens High School and had served as a detention officer for the Henderson County Sheriff's Office since 1991 and was a member of the Peace Officers Association. She was a single parent, having raised two beautiful children that she was extremely proud of. She was preceded in death by her father; and brother, Steve Meadows. Survivors include her son, Wesley Allen Reed of Brownsboro; daughter, Jennifer Nicole Reed of Athens; twin sister, Judy Manuel of Brownsboro; sisters, Tammy Manuel of McKinney, Carol Hale of McKinney, Sybil Clement of Orleans, Ind., and Frances Holcomb of Houston; brothers, Michael Ray Meadows of Mineola and Harold Manuel Jr. of Baytown; and numerous nephews and nieces.     Services for Edward Retzloff, 75, of Athens are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Foster & Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Art Miers officiating. Burial will be at the Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. Mr. Retzloff died Dec. 9, 1998, at East Texas Medical Center Athens. He was born April 17, 1923, in Millington, Mich., the only son of Czechoslovakian immigrants. He was the youngest of 13 children. Mr. Retzloff had resided in Athens since 1961. Mr. Retzloff was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian J. Retzloff on Oct. 25,1985,; and eight sisters. He is survived by one son, Daniel Retzloff of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Tony Miers of Sulphur Springs; one stepdaughter, Linda Sterline of Michigan; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Alma Zelmer of Saginaw, Mich., Emma Ruff of Saginaw, Mich., Bertha Dillard of Flint, Mich., and Lydia Zachman of Mason, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Rickman was a resident of Tyler since 1995. He previously lived in Kerens. He was a Baptist and a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Skinner died Dec. 27, 2003, in Tyler. He was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Henderson County to the late Albert and Rosie Lee Dodd Skinner. He was a lifelong resident of Athens and a member of Cool Springs Primitive Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was well known as a tradesman in many different fields. He loved to farm and work in his garden and provided many people with fresh vegetables every year. He was an honest, loving and caring husband and father. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Margie Odell Skinner of Athens; sons and daughters-in-law, William A. and Linda K. He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Malakoff to the late Robert Lee and Lula Virttie Hawthorne Stallings. He was a former resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Pamona, Calif., but spent most of his life in Athens and Henderson County, where he was a self-employed carpenter, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force.     Hawk Vernon Scott

    Hawk Scott, 73 died in a Dallas hospital Saturday at 11;30 p.m. after a brief illness. Born in Malakoff November 6, 1896, he moved to Murchison as a child and lived there untill moving to Athens 10 years ago. He was a retired employee of Cotton Belt Railroad, his wife Mrs. Jackie Scott died Sept. 26, 1969. Mr. Scott is survived by four sons, Vernon Scott of Dallas, Roy Scott of Jacksonville, and Gerald Scott and Kenneth Scott of Garland, four daughters, Mrs. Irene Griffin of Frisco, Mrs. Flogene Little of El Paso and Mrs. Bonnie Jo Gardner and Mrs. Eloise Gardner both of Kaufman, one sister, Mrs. Lucie Cook of Athens and 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Athens to Norman Joshua and Mary Janet Horn Cox. She had been a resident of Athens all her life, and a member of First Baptist Church in Athens since 1945. She was a volunteer at East Texas Medical Center hospital, a member of the Needlecraft Club and a member of the Genealogy Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband of 52 years, G.L. Smith. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lottie Barrow and Lois Cox; brothers, Carl Cox, Roy Cox, Thurman Cox, Glenn Cox, Leonard Cox and Selman Cox. He was a resident of Fort Worth for almost two years. He was an avid traveler and a self-employed roofer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, H.B. Terry Jr. and Basil Terry; and sisters, Opal Wallace and Pauline Johnson.     Athens Weekly Review Nov. 28, 1940 Death Claims War Veteran At Gov't Hospital Following a long illness B. L. (Barney) Thompson, 51, World War veteran and a native of Henderson county, died Thursday morning at 6 o'clock in the Veterans Hospital at Dallas. The deceased had been a resident of Corsicana for the past seven years but prior to that had spent most of his life as a citizen on this county where he was born. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Shelby Chapel cemetery near Athens with Rev. D. R. Cartlidge, pastor of the West Athens Baptist Church, in charge. Military rites were scheduled for the internment service. Mr. Thompson, an overseas veteran who was gassed in France, was born in the Ash community near Athens. He is survived by his widow and six children; his father, E. J. Thompson, Baxter; four brothers, Glenn Thompson, Athens; Randall (Bill) Thompson, Waco; Roy Thompson Baxter; and Troy Thompson, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Mooney, Houston; and Mrs. Jewel Cravey, Athens.

    James E. 'Jim' Thomas

He was born in Canada to Charles Edward and Iva Loretta Ingram Thomas. Mr. Thomas is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Theresa Wentworth Thomas, on January 15, 1979. He was a resident of Athens since 1985 and a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Athens. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was also a speaker for the American Association of Retired People. He married Lena Belle Gartman Grissom on March 28, 1987. Services are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Tiner died March 11, 2000, in Balch Springs. She was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Athens to Luther and Myra Willingham Cox. Mrs. Tiner resided in Balch Springs for 24 years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Athens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Tiner, on Oct. 3, 1994; and her parents.     Shelby Frizzell Torrance

    SHELBY FRIZZELL TORRANCE, M.D., slipped gracefully away from us, Saturday morning, October 30, 2004. We pray for her eternal rest, and joy in the loving arms of our Lord through Jesus Christ, Amen. Born in Athens, Texas, October 21, 1923; the third child of Jo Ella and John Bunyan Frizzell; she had just celebrated her 81st birthday. Dr. Torrance is survived by her daughter, Susan Shelby Torrance, and sister, Bess Casanova. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Bunyan Frizzell, Jr., and brother William Decal Frizzell. Numerous nieces, nephews, and all of their children, complete the circle of surviving relatives. Friends, Dr. Mary Jane Haskins, and Susan East, assisted the family in providing loving care for Shelby in her final years as her health, and memory began to fade. Dr. Shelby Torrance served as chairman of the Women's Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department for Del Mar Jr. College beginning in 1950. In addition she was the varsity coach for the Men's and Women's tennis teams, when Del Mar participated in Jr. College athletics. Always a pioneer, and community leader, she became the coordinator for Health Education at Del Mar College, before completing 34 years and retiring. She was directly responsible for the construction of the Del Mar Aquatics Center, and adjacent tennis courts. Recognizing her dedication to excellence, and her students; a permanent plaque was erected, and the tennis courts were named for her upon her retirement. After retirement from Del Mar Jr. College in 1984, she became the USPTA Director of the HEB Tennis Center in Victoria, Texas; and later held the same position at Al Kruse Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Academic training included B.S., the University of Texas at Austin; M.A. Teachers College, Columbia University in New York; and Ed D., the University of Texas in Austin. As a community and educational leader, her enthusiasm, and energy were boundless. She was the first woman to serve as a Chairman of the Officiating Committee for the NCAA National Men's Tennis Championships held in Corpus Christi, 1975 and 1976. Numerous local organizations benefited from her long service on the Board of Directors including, the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Water Safety Committee, Texas Tennis Association, and local Tennis Umpires Committee. Honors included Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Del Mar College (1970); Outstanding Educators of America (1975); Twenty-Year Service Award, Coastal Bend American Red Cross (1976); Certificate of Merit from the American Cancer Society (1975); and Appreciation Award from the Corpus Christi Tennis Association for leadership and the founding of the Corpus Christi Umpires Association (1976). Throughout her long career, Dr. Shelby Torrance loved people, promoted education, and believed in tennis and swimming as the most beneficial lifetime sports available. As a tennis competitor, she was a High School Texas 4A Singles champion from Austin High School, Texas Women's Open titles in Singles and Doubles, were achieved while playing No. #1 for the University of Texas in Austin. Shelby continued to win various USTA age divisions, and special categories, including Texas Section Mother/Daughter champion, for 4 decades. Following a lifetime of achievement, she was inducted into the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame; along with Howard E. Butt, Sr., George Richey, and Edgar Weller in 1990.     Leo Warrick

    Funeral services for Leo Warrick, 78, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Cooper Funeral Home of Athens with George Folmar and Dan Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery near Athens. Mr. Warrick was born on Sept. 10, 1926, in Pittsburg to Shelton and Claudie Warrick, who both preceded him in death. He was reared in Pittsburg and attended schools there. On March 17, 1945, he married Ruby Laverne Kennedy and they moved to Dallas, where they lived for several years. The Warrick family moved to Van Zandt County in 1969 and to Henderson County in 1979. He was the owner and operator of Warrick Upholstery Company of Athens. He enjoyed bowling and fishing. Mr. Warrick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby Warrick of Athens; son and daughter- in-law, Larry and Christie Warrick of Euless; daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Ronnie Morton of Kemp and Joy and Stephen Lott of Athens; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Charles Rushing of Mesquite and Louise and Rex Banks of Pittsburg; grandchildren, Wendy Dressler, Jo Lynn Stepp, Tammy Mason, Johnny Morton, Misty Warrick, Brianna Warrick, Cody Warrick, Patricia Dupree, Lori Fade, Jacque Marshall, Monique Millender and Mic Lott; and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Cody Warrick, Johnny Morton, Mic Lott, James Millender, Ronnie Brownlow, Wayne Nutt and Ricky Cooper. The funeral home visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will receive condolences at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening.

    Loyd Willingham

    Services for Loyd Willingham, 68, of Murchison are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Murchison under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home in Athens. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Willingham died July 17, 2004, in Fort Worth. He was born in Henderson County to Robert Lee and Bessie McCarley Willingham. He married Connie Sayas Aug. 27, 1977. He was preceded in death by his son, Jay Martinez; brothers, Ernest Bass, Freeman Bass and Mansel Lee Willingham; sister-in-law, Frances Willingham; and parents. Mr. Willingham was an independent truck driver for Riley Transportation. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Murchison and he loved collecting tractors and many other items. He loved cutting wood and planting trees and would help out anyone who needed a helping hand. Survivors include his wife, Connie Willingham of Murchison; sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Jamie Willingham of Sealy and Freddie and Joanne Martinez of Murchison; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Danny Mainer of Rusk, Susan Bearden of Rusk, Ann and Patrick Schrum of Athens and Carolyn and Mike Vasquez of Midlothian; brothers, Robert F. Willingham Sr. of Athens and Bud Willingham of Leagueville; sisters, Lala Cason of Murchison and Grace Booth of Eustace; grandchildren, Rocky Kay Martinez, Madison Martinez, Katie Rittenhouse, Krissy Howe, Kassidy Fuller, Michael Martinez, Jesse Martinez, Amber Martinez, Joshua Vasquez, Anthony Vasquez, Kerian Bearden, Stephen Halbert, Kenny Willingham, Chasity Englade, David Dover, Holly and Brian White and Christy and Randy Phillips; great-grandchildren, Larry Rittenhouse and Caley Englade. Pallbearers will be Buster Willingham, Larry Everett, Jerry Willingham, Glenn Smith, Mark Mulholland and Ricky Marion.     Minnie Stokes Willingham

    Services for Minnie Stokes Willingham, 93, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church in Athens with the Rev. Mike Gibbs officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetary under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Willingham died June 28, 1999, in Athens. She was born July 23, 1905, in Henderson County to Ira Willie and Lillie Stone Stokes. She was a lifelong resident of Athens and a member of Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter D. Willingham, in 1951; children, Roy Arnold Willingham in 1933, and Martha Nell Willingham, in 1938, Joe Dan Willingham, in 1954, and Roegene Pate, in 1974. She is survived by sons, Billy Gene Willingham of Corsicana and Bobby Carroll Willingham of Athens; brother, Frank Stokes of Athens; sisters, Lela Andrews of Athens and Bertha Lee Bremer of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Brandon, Tim, and Tony Willingham, Gary Bower, Tommy Stokes and Tim Hogan. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Kenneth Lemmon, Ira Kinsey, Al Barnes, Joe Johnson, Kenneth Bledsoe and Lonnie Perry. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.     Robert Flynn Wilson Services for Robert Flyn Wilson, 23, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of the Foster & Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Lusk officiating. Mr. Wilson died June 30, 1999, in Tool. He was born June 1, 1976, in Dallas to Glenn Edward and Katherine Jane McCoy Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a carpenter and a Pentecostal by faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Glyn Edward Wilson, and his grandfather, Charlie Melvin McCoy. Survivors include his mother, Katherine McCoy of Douglasville; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Charles Wilson of Trinidad, Danny Wilson of Athens and Glyn Edward Jr. and Barbara Wilson of Texarkana, Ark.; two sisters, Carrie Wilson of Dallas and Kathy McCoy of Athens; maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Videau and Kennneth McManus of Athens; two nieces, Norma Proctor of Athens and Brenna Wilson of Athens; and one nephew, Terry Proctor of Athens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6-8 p.m.

    Tommy S. Windham

    Services for Tommy S. Windham, 65, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Foster & Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry McAden officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Windham died May 16, 1999, at his residence. He was born April 11, 1934, in Oplin to Sam and Pearl Watson Windham and was a member of Bois D'Arc Baptist Church. Mr. Windham married Gwyn McAden in June, 1959. He was a retired truck driver, owner and operator of the Windham Transportation Company and lived in Athens for 35 years, moving to the area from West Texas. Mr. Windham was successful in the registered Yorkshire Hog Industry and showed a grand champion Yorkshire Barrow of the World Series of Swine in Austin, Minn. Mr. Windham was an avid collector and breeder of exotic waterfowl and a loving and caring grandfather. Mr. Windham is survived by his wife, Gwyn Windham of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Christi Lyn and Thomas Goodell of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Dusty and Stacie Windham of Athens; grandchildren, Stormi Kugle, Kelsey Windham, Hannah Windham and Sunni Goodell, all of Athens; one future grandchild; and brother, Billy Ray Windham of Oplin. Pallbearers will be Jason McAden, Greg McAden, Jimmy Mitchell, Jerry Wright, Mike Davidson and Dewayne Phillips. Visitation with the family will be from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
