Chief Wofford Police Veteran Dies
at Athens
Athens, Texas
May 11, 1938
Jack I. Wofford, 66, who served Athens as Chief
of police more than thirty years and
who had forty years of service as a peace officer in Henderson
County to his credit,
died Wednesday morning. He was a member of one of the
countys pioneer and best-known
families and was known to thousands of East Texans as the Chief.
He was Athens first City
Marshall on its incorporation in 1901 and had served in that
capacity almost continuously since.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the home,
conducted by the Rev. M. L. Fuller,
pastor of the First Baptist Church, and Dr. W. G. Fletcher,
pastor of the First Methodist Church.
City offices will be closed all day.
Wofford was born at Ladonia, Fannin County, but
had lived in this county since a child. He was a son
of the late Capt. J. H. Wofford, pioneer Sheriff
of Henderson County. He is survived by his wife and
four sisters, Mrs. C. E. Coleman of Mabank, Mrs.
J. J. Powers of Waco, Mrs. W. T. Carrol of
Athens
and Mrs. Guy Green of Waurika, Okla.
