James Mattison Herring was married to Nancy Ann Burton 28 April 1866 and had issue: Ludicia and Louvina. Me married Mary Margarette Bigham 28 April 1870 and had issue: Amanda Jane, James Walter, Nancy Jane, Laura May, David Whitney, Della May, Lela Ann,Minnie Maude, Robert Miller, Emmett Frank infant and James Mattison, Jr. (Muriel Herringof Texas from the family bible of "Aunt Florence")
James M. was the son of Peyton Herring and his second wife, Ludicia Friend, who he married in Illinois. His first wife had been Mary Evans, d/o John Evans and Eleanor Jones of Pulaski County, KY. Peyton was in 1806 Pulaski County, KY where he owned land on Wolf Creek. He was on the Tax Rolls when he became of age. Subsequently, he was placed as the son of William Herring and Jane _______. Jane may be the Janus Culverhouse who married William Herring in
1785 Granville County, North Carolina.Family lore says that Peyton was the son of a Peyton Herring and was a full-blooded German. I did find a Peyton Herring who was part of the Old Tappan "Haring" Family of New York. Peyton was of an older generation and was German. However, I have in no way connected them.
A possiblility, if this is true, would be the van Hoeck/Van Hook trail from Manhattan to Albany to Monmouth County, NJ to Orange Co., NC to Washington County, VA to Borbon Co., KY to Pulaski County, Kentucky. The van Hooks intermarried with the Harring/Herrings there.
However, at this time the propensity of the evidence points toward William and Jane as the parents.
William was a likely brother to my Shadrack Herrin(g) who married Rebecca Stogsdill in Rowan County, NC.
Shadrack was the likely son of Edward and Maryan Herring who hailed from Wake Co., NC (next to Granville County). Edward was the son of Edward Herring of Chatham Co., NC.Larry Herrin
