Hill County Texas
David E. Steele (B. 2 Dec. 1815, D. 30 Sept. 1905) and his wife Margaret Ann
Carroll Steele (B. 27 Jan. 1824, D. 22 Mar. 1901) came to Texas from Arkansas
in late 1854. They came to Hill County in 1855 and bought land for a farm for fifty cents an acre from the state of Texas. Subsequently he bought an adjoining farm for a dollar an acre.They are listed in the 1860 Hill County Census. David farm was near Scott Chapel. David and Margaret are buried at Scotts Chapel Cemetery. Their pictures are attached. s Their son, James (Jim) Lafayette Steel is my grandfather (B. 18 June 1854, D. 17May 1935). Jim married Mary Ann (Molly) Parham on 19 Sept. 1878 and they had a farm just east of Scotts Chapel. They (and the Parhams) are buried in Vaughan Cemetery. Attached is a picture of Jim and Molly (taken in 1920) with their daughter-in- law Bonnie, and some of their grandchildren (lt. to rt. seated Richard Crockett and Oliver Rex; center Molly holding baby, Joe L.. and standing Hazel, E. Chrystell, Bonnie, and Jim) O. Rex was Bonnie and Tom Steele son. R. Crockett, Hazel, E. Chrystell are the children of Joseph Lafayette Steele and his 1st. wife, Ebbie Mae Stanford (who died in 1918) Baby Joe L. is by his 2nd. wife, Mary Baker Steele.

Steel - part 2:My father, Joseph Lafayette (J.L.) Steele, was born in Hill County on his parent farm near Scotts Chapel on 27 July 1886. His parents, Molly and Jim, had two baby girls that died as infants before J.L. was born. His brother, Thomas Crockett, was born on 27 April 1888. Later Tom had a farm next to his parents.s
