Celeste, Jan. 29.--Celeste now ranks as one of the
leading athletic centers in this section of the state due to the recent
completion of a new five thousand dollar gymnasium erected in the heart
of the business district in which basketball and other indoor sports can
be played. They gymnasium was erected by the citizens of Celeste
who several months ago began a move for the building and carried the plans
through.
Last Friday night, the first athletic contest was
staged in the new building. The Celeste Blue Devils of the high school,
coached by S. M. Meeks, were defeated by the Austin Pouchers 21 to 7 in
a basketball game. The Blue Devils came back into their class Saturday
night when they trounced the Bonham cage team 28 to 14.
Coach S. M. Meeks, who is also county athletic director,
has announced plans for a basketball tournament of all rural schools in
the county March 1, 2. (12 ?). This tournament is expected to be
one of the most attractive of its kind that has ever been staged in Hunt
County and is expected to draw a large crowd to Celeste. Mr. Meeks
also announced that fans of Celeste and surrounding territory will be given
the opportunity to witness several real basketball games. The Blue
Devils have games scheduled with the Wills Point High School and negotiations
are under way to schedule games with Greenville High School Lions.
