Cunningham Hotel Destroyed In Celeste

Celeste Has Fire Loss

The Cunningham Hotel, an old landmark in Celeste, was burned last Saturday morning (April 3, 1926).

The Cawthon Barber Shop building was burned and a vacant building belonging to Taylor and McGregor was damaged.

The Greenville Fire Department responded to the call and helped to check the spread of flames.

Fire was discovered in the second story of the hotel during the breakfast hour and spread rapidly to adjoining buildings.

The loss on the hotel building was estimated at $8,000.00 and equipment $4,000.00.

Most of the furniture in the barber shop was carried to safety, but the building burned, loss of about $1,000.00 reported.

The vacant building was damaged; it was estimated at $1,000.00.

The Henslee Lumber Company was seriously threatened by the flames, but was not damaged.
Some damage to telephone and electric wires was noted.

Chief Rowsey directed the Greenville firemen who rendered capable assistance in checking the spread of flames.

Celeste is planning for a water system and it is possible that an up-to-date water plant will be installed to serve that town.  (Thursday, April 8, 1926, The Greenville Messenger)
