Celeste Is Third in Region 3 - B With Final Win
Sherman--The Celeste Blue Devils, after dropping a crucial 72 - 57 loss to powerful Detroit in the Region 3 - B playoffs, went on to whip Sadler - Southmayd, 63 - 53, to gain third place in the region in the Saturday finals.
In the loss to Detroit, Earl Mitchell carried the load for the winners with an eighteen point effort. He was followed by Gary Moore with sixteen points, Ollie Johnson with fifteen, Jay Wood with thirteen, and Porter Griggs with ten. Kenneth Sumrow paced the Blue Devils with twenty-two points and Bob Barnard and Tim Gilliam hit for seventeen and fourteen points respectively.
The win over S&S was not as easy for the Blue Devils as the final score indicated. At one time, the Celestians were down sixteen points in the second quarter before battling back to take the ten point win.
Bob Barnard paced the Blue Devils with a twenty-six pint scoring spree while teammate Tim Gilliam again hit the double figures with a twenty-one point contribution. S&S was led by the thirty-four point effort of Rickey Clements, the only Sadler-Southmayd man in the double figures. (March 4, 1968, The Greenville Herald Banner)
