Alton C. Byrd, 83, of Lone Oak died Jan. 27, 2007, in a Greenville nursing facility.
He was born Jan. 3, 1924, in San Augustine, son of George C. and Mae Byrd. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force where he achieved the rank of master sergeant and retired with 20 years’ service.
He was a mail contractor and owned several cross-country trucking companies for more than 40 years. He was also a devoted member of Prairie Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors are a son, Robert W. Byrd and wife Jan of Greenville, and grandsons Steve Byrd of Round Rock and Kenneth Byrd of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ann Byrd; his parents and a brother, Allen Byrd.
A funeral service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday at Prairie Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Witt officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie Valley Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Lynch Funeral Service.
