Saphrona Bess Milam Bates
Mrs. Saphrona Bess Bates, prominent Hunt County woman, died at 4:00 AM, Saturday, July 10, 1954, at her home in the Crescent community near Celeste. She was eighty-five.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, July 11, 1954, at the Wieland (Weiland ?) Church of Christ with Wes Weatherford on Collinsville officiating. Burial was in the Wieland Cemetery.
Grandsons were pallbearers.
A native of Hickman County, Tennessee, Mrs. Bates was born on September 21, 1868, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Milam. She was reared in Tennessee and came to Texas in 1913, locating in Collin County. She moved to Hunt County in 1914, and with the exception of two years in Tennessee had since made her home here.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William Clements of Ridgeley, Tennessee; four sons J. L. B. Walker of Caddo Mills, Alonzo Bates of Celeste; Dillard Bates of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Michael Bates of California; and a number of grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
