Mrs. J.M. Cecil Is Called by Death; Rites Tomorrow
At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chloe Cecil Clark, 3505 Pickett street, Mrs. J.M. Cecil, 67 a resident of Texas more than forty years, passed away at 10:45 o’clock Thursday night. She had been an invalid for the past eight years and had been confined to her bed since last April.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Neer and LyBrand Chapel with Rev. W.O. Majors officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Pugh, Bud Pugh, Guy Black, Jim Orr, Harve Peyton and Jim Peyton.
Mrs. Cecil, who was Valerie Jane Newman before her marriage, was born in Virginia on March 22, 1875, came to Texas at the age of 21 and had since resided in this state. On June 24, 1895, she was married to the late J.M. Cecil, who preceded her in death five years ago. She had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Clark since her husband’s death.
A conscientious Christian, Mrs. Cecil was a member of the Shady Grove Methodist church and a close follower of the teachings of the Master. She counted her friends by her acquaintances and today they were lauding her for her numerous fine traits which stamped her as a splendid citizen.
Mrs. Cecil is survived by seven children, H.L. Cecil, Dallas; Eugene Cecil, Midland; Jeff Cecil and Waldo Cecil, Shreveport, La.; Grover Cecil, Greenville; Arthur Cecil, Dallas and Mrs. Chloe Clark Cecil, Greenville. She is also survived by four brothers, Jerome Newman, Keevy, Ky.; George Newman, Jonesville, Va.; Jeff Newman, Goldburg, Ky., and Earl Newman, London, Ky., three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Philpot, Gary, Indiana; Mrs. Martha Cox, Covington, Ky., and Mrs. Rachel P. McKinney, El John, California. Nine grandchildren also survive.
