E. B. Thompson
Commerce--January 17, 1917, this morning as of eight o'clock, one of the noblemen and pioneer Methodist preachers, the Rev. E. B. Thompson, has passed away at his home here, after an illness of several weeks. He was fully conscious to the end and sent word to the North Texas Conference: "Tell brethren of the conference that I died in the faith."
It was his request that his body be embalmed and held until the weather clears up so that his great number of friends in the county and over the conference could attend his funeral and this request will be complied with. For this reason, no time has been set for his burial.
The Rev. Thompson was a native of Alabama. He was seventy-six years of age. He came to Texas in 1870 and joined the North Texas Conference in 1874 and for a number of years served a number of pastoral charges in this section, including Mount Pleasant, Crandall, Winnsboro, Floyd, Celeste, College Mound, Chisholm, and other points. At the latter place, he had taught before entering the work. He taught at several places after coming to Texas and had accumulated some property when he began preaching and he was well to do when old age overtook him. It was he who built Commerce to a station serving that place many years ago and he had made his home there for twenty years (cannot read).
He leaves an aged widow; two sons, John Thompson and Arthur Thompson; and three daughters, one of whom Mrs. Tom Knight, lives here.
