Ira Merton England
Ira Merton England, prominent landowner and one of Hunt County's oldest citizens, died at 10:25 PM, Wednesday night, June 16, 1954, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Norris in Celeste. He was 93.
Funeral services for Mr. England will be held Sunday, June 20, 1954, at 4:00 PM at the Celeste High School Auditorium. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
A native of Decaturville, Tennessee, Mr. England was born on September 30, 1861, the son of the Rev. A. R. England and Nancy C. Kennedy England. His parents came to Texas when he was a boy and located in the White Rock community. He had lived in and around Celeste since boyhood and was one of the most prominent men of that section of the county.
Mr. England, one of this section's most prominent landowners was a successful farmer for many years, and also operated a business in Celeste. He served several years as County Commissioner and was a member of the Celeste School Board for a number of years. He ha contributed much to the early growth of Celeste.
He was a member of the Celeste Methodist Church and served on the Board of Stewards and a trustee of the church for many years.
Surviving are two sons, W. D. England of Detroit, Michigan, Kennedy England of Dallas; six daughters, Mrs. Albert Norris of Celeste, Mrs. J. Leon Puckett, Mrs. J. E. Surratt, and Mrs. Calanthe E. Bowman of Dallas, Mrs. R. F. Lewis of Hillsboro, Mrs. Frances E. Mire of Houston; twelve grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, A. D. England of Greenville; and a sister, Mrs. J. Riley Greenville of Greenville.
