George Keith
George Keith, 60, pioneer Hunt County resident and for years one of the leading market men of Greenville, died early today, September 1, 1933, in Fort Worth after an illness of about a year's duration. Mr. Keith left Greenville about six weeks ago and went to Fort Worth for treatment. His death came as a severe shock to members of the family and friends.
Definite funeral arrangements had not been made today pending the arrival of relatives; however, it is believed that the services will be held sometime Saturday and burial will be in Hogeye Cemetery near Celeste.
The body was brought to this city today by Stringer and Sons.
Mr. Keith who was one of the most well known citizens of Greenville and Hunt County was born at Celeste and had made his home in this county practically all of his life. For years he had been a resident of Greenville and was prominent in business circles. He had been engaged in the meat market business for a number of years and operated several different markets here. He was recognized for his ability as a market man and was a leader in this type of business.
For a year Mr. Keith had been in ill health; however, it was not believed that his condition was serious until several weeks ago when he was carried to Fort Worth and underwent examinations at a clinic. He and his family took an apartment in Fort Worth to remain there while he was being treated. He had been in a critical condition for several days and death was not unexpected.
Mr. Keith was a conscientious Christian gentleman and had been a member of the Methodist Church for a number of years. Possessed of many fine traits that stamped him as a gentleman in every sense of the word, he quickly made friends wherever he went and had a legion of friends and admirers in this city and vicinity who will join the bereaved family in mourning his passing. He was at all times honest and fair in his business dealings, was kind, friendly and courteous, and had the esteem of all who knew him. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a true and loyal friend and neighbor.
Surviving are his wife and four children, Ray Keith of New York,
Mrs. Cameron English of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Alex Conn of Lufkin, and Miss Edith Paul Keith who was living with he and Mrs. Keith during their stay in Fort Worth. Also surviving are two brothers, Judge J. N. Keith of Austin and Joe Keith of Craig, Colorado, and four sisters, Mrs. B. B. Cobb of Greenville, Mrs. E. D. Bickham and Mrs. Lem Bickham of Celeste, and Mrs. R. N. Hagler of Clovis, New Mexico. Numerous other relatives also survive.
