Gus C. McHam Dies Saturday
Pioneer Wholesale Grocer Salesman of Greenville Dies At Dallas
Funeral services for Gus C. McHam, 54, pioneer wholesale grocer salesman of this city, who died in a Dallas hospital at 6:45 o'clock Saturday morning, after failing to rally from an operation Wednesday, will be held at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon from Wesley
Methodist church.
Rev. Leo Johnston, of Dallas, will conduct the service, being assisted by Dr. John N.
Rentfro, pastor of the church. Interment will follow in Forest Park cemetery.
Pallbearers will be : John Cain, Doyle Rogers, Benton Wolfe, Raymond Stephens, W.I. Frazier and Clark Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the Paris Grocery Company and the customers of the territory he served.
The body was removed from Dallas Saturday to the Gray Funeral Home, where it will remain until shortly before the funeral hour.
Gus C. McHam was born January 6, 1888, at Faught, in Lamar county, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.J. McHam, who were pioneer citizens of Texas.
In 1909 he was married to Miss Lela Seay in Paris. She preceded him in death on
September 3, 1939.
Survivors include the following children: E.R. McHam and Richard Lee McHam, Fort Worth; Fred D. McHam, San Angelo; Miss Mary Virginia McHam and Gus C. McHam, Jr. of Greenville; six grandchildren; a brother, B.J. McHam, of Wichita Falls; a sister, Mrs. Rufus Brooks, of San Antonio; two half-brothers, George McHam and Clifton McHam, of Paris, and a half-sister, Mrs. Mahlon Nobles, of Pecos, and numerous other relatives.
Before his connection with the Paris Grocery Company, Mr. McHam was a salesman for the England-Haynes Company, of Paris, for a number of years. It was in recognition of his splendid service for this firm that the Paris Grocery Company sought his services.
From the time he came to Greenville he had been a member of Wesley Methodist church and was active in both church and Sunday School work. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the United Commercial Travelers.
In the time he was able to spare from his business Mr. McHam was an avid sports fan, a great lover of the out of doors. Fishing, golfing, football were among the outdoor sports he enjoyed most.
His honesty and integrity, his unfailing good humor, his love for his family and the
countless friends he had made through the years he spent in the territory he loved to call his home were a treasure to him and will constitute a monument to the memory of a man who lived a full, if all too short life. The Supreme Architect of the Universe has now called him home to that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. His passing is a matter of poignant sorrow to relatives and friends, but they can recompense themselves with the feeling that in the infinite scheme of the Universe, it was all for the best.
