QUINLAN — Jack Aubrey Cobb was born July 28, 1927, in Dodd City; the son of the late Thomas Wheeler and Naydene Cobb. He died Jan. 17, 2007, in a Rowlett hospital.
Jack received a B.S. degree from Sam Houston State in 1948, a master of science degree from East Texas State Teacher’s College in 1952 and earned his Army aviation wings in 1957. His military career included a tour of duty in Korea from 1946 to 1947; he was company commander of the Greenville National Guard and was mobilized to Fort Polk during the Berlin Crisis.
Later he was the National Guard Battalion commander headquartered in Terrell. He retired from the military with the rank of Army colonel on July 28, 1987.
Mr. Cobb started the Vocational Agriculture Department in Quinlan Independent School District and retired from teaching in Quinlan in 1981 with 33 years of service. The Quinlan VO-AG Center is named in his honor. Following his teaching retirement, he became a federal crop insurance adjuster.
Mr. Cobb served as a deacon for 45 years at First Baptist Church of Quinlan. He helped found the Lions Club and Little League in Quinlan. He also helped charter the Quinlan Bank and served as director and board president of Hunt Memorial Hospital District. He was an avid hunter of bobwhite quail and a fisherman of channel catfish.
Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Jacque Joyce Cobb; daughters and sons-in-law Claudia Joy and Roger Tadlock of Quinlan, Judy Gail Land of Quinlan and Jill Denise and Tim Mabe of Wills Point; 10 grandchildren. Matthew Wayne Tadlock of Dallas, Heather Joy and husband Chris Abel of Irving, Jared David Tadlock and fiancée Lisa Padilla of Plano, Andrew Ryan Land of Commerce, John David and wife Chrystal Pope of Wills Point, Julie Diane Pope of Arlington, Timothy “Scott” Cobb Mabe of Wills Point, Emili June and husband Jody Jarvis of Cumby, Jodi Rene Mabe of Cumby, and Kathryn Jewel Rogers of Cumby; seven great-grandchildren, John Michael Pope, Austin, Hannah and Alden Jarvis, Landon Mabe, Grace Bailey and Jackson Petty; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Marteen Cobb of Quinlan; sister and brother-in-law Lee and Bill Dresh of Mesquite; and many nephews and nieces.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Goggans Funeral Home in Quinlan. Visitation is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
