COMMERCE — James Edward Richards, Ph.D., 87, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Commerce, died Nov. 3, 2006, in Florissant. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Commerce with Rev. Lisa Greenwood-Wolcott officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery. The son of Lester L. and Marie Ripper Richards, he was born Dec. 14, 1918, in Harrisburg, Pa. He married Dorothy Drake Richards on July 18, 1944, in Commerce. Dr. Richards was a teacher-administrator. He was one of the founders and was president of the Arlington Fine Arts Council, was president of the Texas Association of Music Schools, was elected outstanding alumnus of the West Chester University of Pennsylvania, head of the Music Department at Texas A&M University in Commerce 1950-1975, and was head of the Music Department of the University of Texas at Arlington 1975-1985. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Commerce. Survivors include three sons, James Richards Jr. of Florissant, Mo., Mark Richards of Berkeley, Calif., and Donald Richards of San Francisco, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Lester Richards of Camp Hill, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Robert Richards; and a sister, Elizabeth Richards. Pallbearers are James Deaton, Gene Lockhart, Conrad Bauschka, Steve Humfeld, Charles McGough and Ben Doughty. Visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce.
