Jestena Jose Pierce Hunter

Mrs. Jestena Jose Pierce Hunter, 67, of Celeste, died at 9:00 AM, Sunday January 9, 1972, in a Greenville hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, January 10, 1972, in the Sorrells and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Harrison Baker and the Rev. Freeman Pearson officiating.

Burial will be in the Lane Cemetery.

She was born on November 10, 1904, in Hunt County, the daughter of Walter Powell Pierce and Josie Roach Pierce.

She was married to Ira Hunter in 1927.

Mrs. Hunter was a retired devoted school teacher and coach and had taught in Hunt County schools for thirty-nine years. She was a 1922 CHS graduate, a member of the winning 1922 basketball squad.

She was a member of the Celeste Methodist Church where she was active in primary program, VBS, and other programs.

Surviving are her husband, Ira Hunter of Celeste; her mother, Mrs. Josie Edna Pierce of Celeste; two daughters, Jonnye Joe Jenkins of Dallas and Elizabeth Ann Hunter of Celeste; and a brother, Wesley Pierce of Dallas.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Elizabeth Ann.

Pallbearers will be G. W. Tillerson, T. B. Weatherley, Jr., Hubert Shields, Harbert Byers, Carl Lacy, and Johnny Lyon.

A Tribute to Jestena Hunter

"Tributes to Jestena," yes, several have been published, while still many more loom in the hearts of us whose lives she has touched through the years. Whether we live near or far from Celeste at this time, the loss is just as great and just as real. Isn't it beautiful to have it said over and over, "how busy she was, how concentrated to her classroom, her friends, and her responsibilities as a Citizen in her community?" "Miss" Hunter always had the answers and had ways of motivation that many teachers could take note of today. Those of us who were privileged to have known and loved Jestena can always remember her smile, enthusiasm for life, and that "twinkle in her eye"...
