ARLINGTON — John Thomas McAfee, 83, a contractor and sportsman, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2006, at his home. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Arlington. Burial is in East Mount Cemetery in Greenville. Mr. McAfee was born in Greenville. At 17, he saw combat as a field engineer in Germany. After the war, he studied industrial arts at the University of North Texas, where he and a classmate built a canoe they paddled down the Mississippi from Minnesota to New Orleans. In the 1950s, he joined the building boom in Arlington; building many homes and even more dental and medical clinics all over the Metroplex. When he wasn’t working, he liked to fly his airplane, ride his horses and fish and hunt with his friends. His love of the outdoors led him to develop a mountainous piece of property in Colorado, surrounded by the San Juam National Forest that he enjoyed sharing. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Arlington and loved his Sunday School class. Survivors are his devoted wife of 25 years, Janice McAfee; step-daughters, Jan Anderson and husband, Zane, and Jo Lynn Baker; nephews, Mac Martin and wife, Peggy, and J.T. Martin; niece, Martha Sue Meek and husband, John; grandchildren, Jess and Josh Anderson and Rusty, and John and Amy Baker; grand-nephew, Austin Meek; grand-nieces, Jackie Hooks and husband, Corey, and Jeannie Wildman. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Glenna Mae Rich and Eleanor Grace Martin of Arlington. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Arlington Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
