Mrs. McHam Passes Away
Prominent Greenville Woman Succumbs Friday Afternoon
Mrs. Gus McHam, 46, prominent Greenville woman passed away at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at her family home, 3025 Cornelia Street. She had been in failing health for several months.
Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Wesley Methodist Church, conducted by pastor, Rev. Paul Stephenson. Internment will follow in Forest Park cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: E.F. Smith, Raymond Stephens, Archie White, John Cain, Benton Wolfe and Doyle Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be Oscar Tannenbaum and employees of the Greenville Dry Goods Company and employees of the Paris Grocery Company.
Mrs. Lela Seay McHam was born on December 29, 1892 at Deport, Lamar County, Texas, being the daughter of Dr. R.G. Seay and Mrs. Seay. She was reared in Lamar County and spent most of her early life at Blossom, where she was educated.
On March 3, 1909 she was married to Gus McHam and they continued to make their home in Lamar county for several years, later residing a short time in Clarksville and Winnsboro before coming to Greenville on June 1, 1925, where she had since made her home.
In the fourteen years that Mrs. McHam had resided in Greenville she had endeared herself to numerous friends. She was a leader in local church, social and business circles and in every instance was ready to lend her assistance for the best interest of her community. She was charitable and never passed an opportunity to assist those in distress.
For several years Mrs. McHam had been identified in local business circles and for the past few years immediately preceding her illness was employed at the Greenville Dry Goods Company, where she was recognized as a valuable and dependable employee.
Mrs. McHam was a noble Christian, having been a member of the Methodist Church since early womanhood. Upon moving to Greenville she placed her membership with Wesley Methodist Church and took an active part in the women's activities of her church. She was also a member of the Greenville Chapter of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, four sons and one daughter, Eugene McHam of Dallas, Fred McHam, Gus McHam, Jr., Richard McHam and Mary Virginia McHam, all of Greenville; her father, Dr. R.G. Seay of Paris; one sister, Mrs. L.M. Stell of Paris; and one brother, Roy Seay of California; three half-sisters, Mrs. Sam Underwood, Rockwall, Mrs. C.A. Bernard, Deport; Mrs. W.C. Jones, Richmond, Ky., and one half-brother, E.G. Peters, of Paris.
