WILSON, N.C. — Leon Watson Rutland Jr., Ph.D., 87, of Wilson, N.C., died Aug. 28, 2006. A private memorial service was planned. The son of Leon and Suetta Mulkey Rutland Watson, he was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Commerce. He received his B.S. degree in 1940 and his M.S. degree in 1941, both at East Texas State Teachers College. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941. He received his Ph.D. in Colorado following the war. Dr. Rutland was a professor emeritus of mathematics at Virginia Tech and Colorado University.
Survivors are his wife, Janet Gaboury Rutland; two daughters, Basia Irland of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lynne Gallimore and husband Jay of Wilson, N.C.; a granddaughter, Britney Gallimore Zaytoun and husband George of New Bern; two grandsons, Hunter Gallimore and wife Angelia of Wilmington, and Derek Irland of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; six great-grandchildren, Meghan, Hayden, Logan and Jordan Gallimore and Georgie and Caroline Zaytoun; and a brother, Don Rutland and wife Rosemary of Orange City, Fla. His parents preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to WilMed Hospice, 1705 Tarboro Street S.W., Wilson, N.C. 27893.
