COMMERCE — Funeral services will be held for Melba Carver Smith in the chapel at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Lisa Greenwood-Wolcott officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Internment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. She died the morning of May 30, 2006, at Bishop Davies Nursing Center in Hurst. Ms. Smith, 96, was born Feb. 20, 1910, in Delta County, daughter of Hugh and Mollie Fife Carver. She was married to Bill D. Smith on Dec. 26, 1928, in the First Christian Church of Commerce. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1984, after 56 years of marriage. She graduated from Yowell Public Schools. Mrs. Smith and her husband were proud members of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce. They made their living as cotton farmers. Mrs. Smith lived her entire life within five miles from where she was born until she moved to the nursing center in Hurst. She loved the community of Yowell and her neighbors in that community. When the need would arise, she was always there with a helping hand or a dish of food.
Mrs. Smith’s last words to her nurse the day she died were “I am fixing to go home. I am worn out.” She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In addition to her husband, her brother, Will Oliver Carver, preceded her in death. Survivors are a sister, Billie Hugh Cummins of Greenville; three nieces, Joy Stewart of Hurst, Susan Archer of Napa, Calif., and Jeanne Austing of Woodville, Wash.; three nephews, Gerald Carver of Irving, Charles Frank McKinney of Memphis, Tenn., and Michael McKinney of Sulphur Springs; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends. Pallbearers will be Gary Anderson, Mike Anderson, L.H. Brown, George McFarland, Marcus Stewart and David Hurt.
