She moved to Lone Oak with her parents at an early age and was reared to a splendid womanhood in that community. On December 24, 1874, she was married to Dr. J. M. Bethell who was practicing in the Lone Oak and Donelton communities. Dr. Bethell preceded his wife in death on February 28, 1900. Two years following her husband’s death, Mrs. Bethell came to Greenville to make her home with her husband and has since resided here. She was one of the most prominent and beloved women of this city and leaves hundreds of friends to mourn her death. Early in life Mrs. Bethell professed faith in Christ during services conducted by the late Rev. Sam Jones, well-known Methodist minister. She united with the Methodist Church and her membership rested in Kavanaugh Church in this city at the time of her death. As long as health permitted, Mrs. Bethell was active in church work. She delighted in being of service for Christianity's cause and never passed by an opportunity to be of service in religious affairs. She had supreme faith in the Master Architect of the Universe and lived a true
Christian life that was fraught with service for the Master and for humanity. Mrs. Bethell was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was active in the affairs of this organization. Since early life she had been affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star. The city and county lost a splendid citizen through death of Mrs. Bethell. She was a noble Christian woman, a kind and loving mother, a true friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed. The life of Mrs. Bethell and the wonderful influence she yielded will ever live as monuments to her memory. She is survived by four children, Leon Bethell, Mrs. Gilbert Shipp, and Mrs. J.T. Kennedy of Greenville and Mrs. T.R. Potts of Emory. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
