Norris (Doc) Lewis
Word came of the death of Norris (Doc) Lewis last Friday, November 3, 1989. He was eighty-one last March 11th and was one of the first Blue Devils football teams' members so named by his Superintendent J. Garland Roach. He taught in the Savage Rural School and one year in North Collin County while attending classes at East Texas. Later he and his wife, Louise, taught in West Texas schools. Their home has been in Denton for many years, retiring from the bus travel agency to apartment living, with their family living in the immediate area. They are Norris Lewis, Jr., Bill and Marilyn Lewis. He had undergone heart surgery, following an attack early last week.
Norris grew up in the Lane community church and school, the three young people, sisters Bess Lewis, Arvie Lewis, and he educating themselves as they worked the family farm, attended E. T. classes in the summer and taught in West Texas schools. Norris was known as "Stonewall" or "Stone," from the Lane School's mud ball wars--he, like the historic Stonewall Jackson, never giving up.
