DEATH OF J. M. SPENCER

WAS A CONFEDERATE VETERAN
OF THE CIVIL WAR

Was mustered in as a Soldier on the
Public Square of
Greenville


At 4:45 yesterday morning James M. (Pad) Spencer died at his home on South Wesley street after a lengthy illness.


Mr. Spencer was born in Ashboro, N. C., June 1840, and came to Texas in 1850,
living most of the time in Greenville.  When the Civil War broke out Mr. Spencer
enlisted in Company D, Stephens regiment and was mustered in on the square in
this city.  He served with credit during the war and at close of the great
conflict returned again to this city.  Mr. Spencer has long been a familiar
figure on the streets and has always taken an active interest in all public
affairs.  He was respected by all as an upright honest man.

He leaves a widow, Mrs. M. E. Spencer, three sons and a daughter, Herbert and
Carl and Miss Jessie live here and Winston resides at Dallas.  He has a brother,
P. H. W. Spencer, in California and a sister, Mrs. Lou Patterson, in Campbell.

The funeral will be held at the late residence at 3 o’clock this afternoon,
burial at East Mount cemetery.

The family have the sympathy of their friends in this time of sorrow.
