TULSA, Okla. — Thomas Boyd Webb (Uncle Boyd) died Jan. 8, 2007, in Tulsa, Okla.
He was born July 9, 1924, in Cooper, son of Earl Thomas and Minnie Scott Webb. He attended school in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School in 1931.
At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Army and served the nation with the Army 398th engineers during the Battle of the Bulge. After his Army service, he attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1950 with a business degree.
Mr. Webb went to work for Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) in Great Bend, Kan., following graduation. While in Great Bend he met Jean Steeples; they were introduced by the landlady at the boarding house where he lived. They married in 1953 following a two-year courtship.
Boyd worked his entire career with ARCO, and while with ARCO he and Jean lived in Perryton, Texas, and Duncan, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla., in addition to Great Bend, Kan. Boyd was active in Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Okla., and volunteered as a Kirk carpenter, helping build wheelchair ramps.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He was a loving husband, brother and uncle — kind and generous, a lot of fun to be around and always willing to lend a hand.
Mr. Webb cheerfully did home repairs for both his mother and mother-in-law, stayed with nieces and nephews when their parents were out of town, played cards, threw tennis balls for dogs, or whatever else was needed. He even went to the opera with Jean.
Survivors are his wife; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Pat Webb of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Earline Bell of Dallas; brothers-in-law Don Steeples and wife Tammy of Lawrence, Kan., and Dave Steeples and wife Joanne of Stockton, Kan.; sisters-in-law Jo Haslett and husband Glenn of Tucson, Ariz., and Lois Settles and husband Bob of Palm Coast, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be lovingly remembered as everyone’s favorite uncle.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. today at Southwood Colonial Chapel, 3612 East 91st Street South, in Tulsa. Interment and a graveside ceremony is at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant View Cemetery in Palco, Kan.
