Walter Garrett Jr., 87, of Greenville, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Scott McManus officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park. Mr. Garrett was born April 26, 1919, in Ennis; the son of Rosa Lamb and Walter Garrett Sr. He married Celesta Harcrow on Aug. 8, 1935, in Ennis.
He proudly served and was well known for his work as a cement finisher in the Hunt County community. He also retired with Cement Masons Local 681 after 36 years.
Mr. Garrett was a member of Living Word Church and will be remembered for his strong and generous spirit and his love for people, especially children.
Surviving are his wife, Celesta Mae Garrett, of Greenville; son, Don Garrett of Greenville; daughter, Nancy Guthrie of Greenville; brother, Samuel Garrett of Fort Smith, Ark.; sister, Modene Grantham of Arlington; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Peggy Garrett; son, Louie Garrett; brothers, Billy Garrett and Lloyd Garrett; and sister, Betty Ann Harper.
Pallbearers are Kelly Garrett, Chaz Garrett, Church Garrett, Bobby Don Garrett, Jeremy East and Leo Hernandez. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the funeral home.
