Melvina Jackson Wilkins
Death of an Aged Lady
Melvina Jackson was born in Polk County, Arkansas October 30, 1831 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Tetters, near Commerce, June 1, 1909 and was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in the Ingram grave yard. Jas Heriage conducted the funeral services.
She was married to Geo Wilkins (who died in 1874) March 8, 1846, 8 miles south of Blackjack Grove, now Cumby. She was the mother of ten children, 6 boys and 4 girls. 6 of her children are still living, they are Mrs. Olie Stephens of Stephenville, Dave Wilkins of Commerce, Mrs. Mary Turley of Stephenville, Mrs. Sarah Tetters, Mrs. Lucy Rector and G B (Buck) Wilkins. All of her children were present except Mrs. Stephens who had been here but had returned to her home about 10 days before.
She had 46 grand children and 48 great-grandchildren. Grandma Wilkins, as she was generally known, was truly one of our earliest settlers having moved here with her parents in 1841. She united with the Baptist church when quite young and remained true to the last and was loved and respected by all who knew her.
