COMMERCE — Willie Valentine Pierce, 88, of Commerce died April 6, 2007, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Lisa Greenwood-Wolcott officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
Born Feb. 14, 1919, he was the son of Theodore P. and Josiephine Williams Pierce. He rescued his wife Nadine and raised her children as his own; they were married 54 years. Mr. Pierce served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from East Texas State University as a maintenance man. He enjoyed gardening and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Boynton and husband George of Andrews; grandchildren Trey Chaney of Commerce, Kirk Chaney of Forney, Chad Chaney of Forney, Ted Williams of Leonard, Greg Williams of Lone Oak, Leigh Ann Lewis of Flower Mound, Brad Boynton of Frisco, Stephanie Martin of Andrews, Brett Boynton of Buda, Amy Duty of Arlington and Laura Brent of McKinney; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Marion Pierce and wife Mildred; a brother-in-law, Travis Surratt; a son-in-law, Scoot Chaney; daughter-in-law Ann Williams; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife three days earlier; a daughter, Lynda Jean Chaney; son James David Williams; eight brothers, Lewis F. Pierce, Harry Eugene Pierce, D.T. Pierce, Richard Pierce, Ernest Pierce, Albert Pierce, Lawrence Pierce and Donald Pierce; and two sisters, Irene Pierce Blassingame and Effie May Pierce Martin.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Ted Williams, Greg Williams, Trey Chaney, Kirk Chaney, Chad Chaney, Brad Boynton and Brett Boynton.
Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1709 State Highway 50, Commerce, Texas 75428.
