Leonard, TX, September 30, 1931--Walter Gibson, aged about forty-five years, was shot to death on the Kraft Gin lot shortly after 7:00 PM, Wednesday. Death was almost instantaneous as he was shot twice through the body with a .32-caliber pistol. Nolan Maxwell, former Burleson College student, was arrested and charged with the killing and was placed in the Fannin County jail at Bonham late Wednesday.
The slaying is alleged to have followed an argument concerning the turnout of some cotton at the gin, where Gibson was working. The pistol used in the slaying is thought to have been the property of the night watchman at the gin and is believed to have been taken from the office at the gin shortly before the shooting took place.
The slain man resided southwest of Leonard (and west of Celeste). He is survived by his widow and three children, Mrs. Lionel McCurley, Charles Gibson, and Bertie Lou Gibson.
No funeral arrangements had been made tonight.
