What is the Kaufman County, TX mailing list?

The Kaufman County, Texas mailing list is a means by which people interested in Kaufman County, TX history and genealogy may communicate with each other in a convenient way.  Posts asking questions or sharing information about your Kaufman County, TX research are encouraged.  This includes any tips that you have found helpful as well as sharing your success stories and your "brick walls".

The mailing list is provided for your use free of charge.  This means there is neither a fee to join the list nor to post a message to the list.  You may join as many mailing lists on RootsWeb as you want; there is no charge nor any restrictions on how many you may subscribe to.

When you join the mailing list, you will receive the posts that other subscribers send to the mailing list.  The posts will be addressed to TXKAUFMA-L@rootsweb.com.  Please note these message are not addressed to you specifically and you are not expected to answer all of the messages you receive.

The mailing list is overseen by the listowner (Justin Sanders) and if you have any problems or questions regarding the mailing list, contact the Kaufman Co., TX mailing "listowner".

What is not acceptable to post to the mailing list?

This list is for Kaufman County, TX genealogy and should be used for that purpose only.  If the message you would like to send does not pertain to Kaufman County, TX then it probably should not be sent to the mailing list.  Below are examples of posts that are unacceptable to send to the mailing list:  virus warnings, chain letters and other hoaxes, attachments, advertisements and flames.

Virus Warnings, Chain Letters, Urban Legends and Other Hoaxes

Virus warnings, chain letters and urban legends are all examples of messages that should never be posted to the Kaufman County mailing list.  Most of these are hoaxes.  More information on these types of messages can be found at:
http://www.spcug.org/hoax.htm

Computer Virus Myths home page
CNET's Favorite Net Hoaxes
Urban Legends References Pages
Don't Spread that Hoax!
The A.F.U. and Urban Legends Archive

The large anti-virus software companies (such as McAfee and Norton) also provide lists of both real computer viruses and virus hoaxes on their websites.

Attachments of any kind

Attachments (including picture files) should never be sent to the mailing list.

Because the mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb do not allow attachments (the software will not allow them to get through to the lists), you do not need to worry about getting a virus from the mailing list.  However, this does not include any message you receive privately from someone who may also be subscribed to the mailing list and you should always use caution when opening an attachment you receive via e-mail.

Advertisements

Posting of advertisements for commercial products or services on this mailing list is prohibited.

Flames

If you feel you must send a rude or insulting message of a personal nature to someone (aka a "flame") do not send it to the list.  These matters are private between individuals and the subscribers of the mailing list do not need to see these messages.  Remember, the messages sent to the list are being permanently archived and may be viewed by others in the future.

Instructions for joining the Kaufman Co., TX mailing list

There are two options you may use when joining the Kaufman County mailing list:  mail mode and digest mode.  It is not necessary to join in both modes as subscribers in either mode receive all of the messages sent to the list.  It is, however, necessary to remember which mode you are subscribed in when you try to unsubscribe; if you are subscribed to the digest mode and you try to unsubscribe from the list mode, you will still be subscribed to the list (you will receive a message saying you have not been unsubscribed because you were not on the list).

Subscribe to TXKAUFMA in List Mode

If you would like to join the mailing list in mail mode (receive each of the posts as a separate message), send the command "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the body of a new e-mail message (in other words do NOT attempt to send it by replying to a previous message) to
TXKAUFMA-L-request@rootsweb.com

You may either leave the subject line blank or  type in "subscribe"; it will work either way.  However, be careful there is no "Re" in the subject line as the computer will automatically not process any requests with "re" in the subject line.

Subscribe to TXKAUFMA in Digest Mode

If you would prefer to receive the mailing list in digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message), send the command "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the body of a new e-mail message (in other words do NOT attempt to send it by replying to a previous message) to
TXKAUFMA-D-request@rootsweb.com

You may either leave the subject line blank or type in "subscribe"; it will work either way.  However, be careful there is no "Re" in the subject line as the computer will automatically not process any requests with "re" in the subject line.

It is very important to follow these instructions as the computer will not be able to act on your request if the instructions are not followed.  Note that the addresses with request in them are the addresses to be used for subscribing (and unsubscribing) from the mailing list and they are not the correct address to send posts to the mailing list.

How do I post a message to the mailing list?

You may post your own messages to the list by sending them to TXKAUFMA-L@rootsweb.com (or by clicking on the link in the box, below).  Notice there is no request in this address and it is not the same address as that used to subscribe to the list.  This address is to be used to post to the list by both the mail-mode and digest-mode subscribers.  The other subscribers will receive the messages you send to this address.  Be sure to include a subject in the subject line or the computer will not post the message.

Post to the Kaufman Co., TX mailing list

If you sent a message to the list and did not see it come back to you, double-check to be sure you sent it to the correct address.

The mailing lists on RootsWeb are "closed".  This means the computer will not post messages it receives from addresses that are not subscribed to the list.  If you have more than one e-mail address, either post only from that address or let the listowner know you would like to post from a second address (ask him to add the address to the "accept list".

Where are the archived posts to the mailing list?

The messages sent to the mailing list are archived and searchable.

Search the Kaufman Co., TX mailing list archives

If you would like to search the archives of any mailing list on RootsWeb, go to http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pll and type in the name of the mailing list.

Why am I not receiving any Messages when I have Subscribed to the Mailing List?

There are two most-common reasons:  no one has posted a message to the list recently or your e-mail address bounced several times and the computer unsubscribed you.  If you believe your e-mail has been bouncing due to a temporary problem with your ISP and you want to be sure you are still subscribed, send another subscribe message to the computer.  If you were bounced off the list, you will receive a new welcome message letting you know you are now subscribed.
