NOTES: Several of the Lee children had moved to Texas before the War of Northern Aggression. Some had married in Mississippi, but they all eventually moved to Texas except three. After the havoc wrought by the war and on hearing of the death of his sister Polly's husband in Leon Co., TX, Jacob, Nancy, and their five youngest children moved by wagon train to Leon Co., TX accompanied by their widowed daughter, Addie, and her child. It is not known what other families were in the wagon train. The youngest Lee child, George, always told that when the wagon pulled out from their home in Hickory, their old Negro "Mammy", who had suckled them after the Emancipation Proclamation, ran behind the wagon with outstretched arms, begging "Please take me with you!" Unable to do so, Jacob had to drive on ignoring her pleas. Their last sight of her was lying in the middle of the road, where she had fallen from exhaustion from running after them. On reaching Leon Co. the Lees
settled on Lyn Branch, a tributary of Buffalo Creek, and lived there for
a year. Then they moved nearer Jacob's sister, Mary "Polly" Lee
Graham and her family. This was somewhere between present Flo and
Midway. At that time it was called Kidd's Mill community.
They lived there for a year. Not being satisfied in that area the
Jacob Lee family moved to Cotton Gin in Freestone Co. where they would
be near several of Nancy's brothers and sisters who had settled there a
few years earlier. They made their home in Cotton Gin for
the remainder of their lives. |
