The photo here is that of the tombstone of James F. Coston (contributed by
his grandson, James Coston).
He was recruited by J. J. McBride and served the complete 4 years with him
during the Civil War. He was not
an officer or person of notation but to have survived the complete tour is a
notable feat. Especially since the history books record 126 men leaving
Leon Co. and only 10 returning. Actually, there were 12.
James and his brother Doyle, they got leave to attend the death bed of their
mother and just never
returned. So they were not recorded at the surrender at Appomatox.
Anyways, James came to Leon Co. from North Carolina as a child in 1855,
then moved to Titus Co., TX after the Civil War.
