BERTHA “BERTA” ETTA EVANS

Bertha “Berta” Etta Evans was born 5-1-1866 in the Redland community of Leon county, Tx.  She died 4-14-1930 in Cross Cut, Tx., in Coleman county. She is buried in the Burkett Cemetery, Burkett, Tx.  Her husband, William Augusta “Bill” Johnson, is buried beside her.

Bertha is on the 1880 U.S. Census for Leon County, Tx. #202. She is listed as living in the household with her sister and brother-in-law: (Both of her parents were dead at this time when she was only 15 yrs. old.)
Thomas R. Pistole, White, Male, age 27, Constable, born in Alabama.  Father born in NC and mother in Al.
Lydia J. Pistole, White, Female, age 35, Wife, married; born in Texas.
BERTHA EVANS, WHITE, FEMALE, AGE 15, SISTER-IN-LAW, SINGLE, BORN IN TEXAS.

Bertha married William Augusta “Bill” Johnson on 12-28-1887 in Leon County, Tx., when Bertha was 2l yrs. of age.

NOTE:  WILLIAM AUGUSTA JOHNSON HAD MOVED FROM CENTERVILLE, GEORGIA, TO CENTERVILLE, TEXAS, WITH HIS PARENTS, YOUNG BEAUREGARD JOHNSON & MARTHA EMMELINE (HEARTLEY) JOHNSON, ALONG WITH HIS 9 SIBLINGS, IN A COVERED WAGON IN APPROXIMATELY 1879.

 They had the following children:

  • George Reese Johnson b. 9-20-1894 near Centerville, Tx.
  • Wedah (Johnson) Sheppard b. 1-16-1893
  • Carrie Agnes (Johnson) Merriman b. 12-17-1890
  • Homer Johnson b. 6-10-1896
  • Essie (Johnson) Sheppard b. 1898
  • Alean (Johnson) Hale b. 2-25-1900
  • Fannie (Johnson) Knight b. 1900

Bertha and “Bill” later moved their family to Coleman County, Texas, and lived out the remainder of their lives in that vicinity where “Bill” was a farmer/rancher.

Bertha is the daughter of

William “Billie” Evans b. 8-15-1818 in Tennessee died 11-23-1867 in Leon County, Tx.,

Note:  I don’t know where he’s buried, but very likely he’s beside his wife in Concord Cemetery in Leon County since there is a blank space on one side of her.  On the other side (between Rebecka and Joseph Evans), is a footstone that reads “W.E.D.”

Rebecca (Walker) Evans b. 1817 in Perry Co., Alabama; died 12-23-1877 in Leon County, Texas; buried in Concord Cemetery, Leon County, Tx. They had the following children:

  • William E. Evans – b. Aug., 1855
  • Nancy L. Evans – b. 9-27-1859
  • James Evans – b. Nov., 1864
  • Bertha “Berta” Etta (Evans) Johnson – b. 5-1-1866

Bertha is the granddaughter of

Joseph Evans b. 5-5-1768 in Va., and died 8-25-1861 in Jewitt, Tx. (Leon County). He is buried in Concord Cemetery, Leon County, Tx. According to History of Perry County, Joseph Evans helped found Marion, Alabama, and named it Marion for the “Swamp Fox.”

And Amelia “Millie” Hawkins, b. 9-26-1784 in Greenville, SC died 9-26-1840 in Marion, Alabama.  Buried in the “Old Evans Cemetery” in Marion (Perry County) Alabama. It is said that Joseph Evans erected a monument before leaving for Texas, that reads: “Sacred to the memory of Amelia Evans, who departed this life Sept. 26th AD 1840 aged 56 years.  She was born in Greenville, South Carolina.”

Bertha is the great-grandaughter of

Robert Evans b. 1744 in Cecil Co., Maryland; died 1830 in Perry County (Marion), Alabama, buried in Old Evans Cemetery on Webb Plantation in Marion, Alabama.  He served in the Revolutionary War as Private in the 10th VA Regt., Capt. Richard Stephens Co.  He enlisted in 1776.  The Commanders were Col. Edward Stevens and Major Samuel Haws….. and

Sarah Hettie May b. abt. 1749 and died abt. 1863 in Perry, Alabama.  Buried in William Reed Family Cemetery.
